John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension

John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension, live, Nice, April 22, 2010

John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension played their first concert of their European tour 2010 in Nice, France on April 22. The lineup is Etienne Mbappe (electric five-string bass), Gary Husband (keyboards and drums) and Mark Mondesir (drums). The set started out with Raju, followed by Nostalgia. The next number – Hi-Jacked featured Etienne Mbappe giving a most intricate solo on which was Dominique diPiazza´s piece de resistance. The Unknown Dissident was played in a most lyrical manner, followed by Gary Husband´s Sully where John McLaughlin quoted John Coltrane´s A Love Supreme. No compositions from To The One were played, however, the set finished with Mother Tongues, and yes there was still an encore to come. John McLaughlin played a wooden Godin with tremolo arm, whereas Etienne Mbappe played a bluish purple five string bass throughout this most well received set. The European and North American audiences do indeed have something to look forward to.
