The Mahavishnu Project is really hitting its stride. In Phase 2 the MP tackles nine more Mahavishnu Orchestra tunes, reinterprets four more it covered on its first release, Live Bootleg, and presents an exciting new original tune based upon the style of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra.
The power and intricacy of this music requires very gifted and dedicated musicians who need to understand the legacy they are taking-on. You have such artists in the MP. The band is wonderfully recorded from live performances from its 2003 tour. Due to the character of the John McLaughlin compositions, drummer Gregg Bendian, guitarist Pete McCann, bassist Stephan Crump, keyboardist Steve Hunt and new violinist Rob Thomas are able to stretch out and put their own stamps on the material making it sound as contemporary, or even beyond, than anything else being presented today. Leader Bendian is a true believer that this is music best heard live to take advantage of the energy created on stage. Anyone who ever saw the original Mahavishnu Orchestra knows this to be true.
The Mahavishnu Project takes off from where the original band left off, presenting us with improvisational electricity for the 21st Century. It is one of the finest bands performing today and this 2-disc set captures that fact.
