AbstractLogix :: Music DVD :: Mahavishnu Orchestra: Live At Montreux - 1974/1984 (2 DVD Set)

Mahavishnu Orchestra: Live At Montreux - 1974/1984 (2 DVD Set)
Mahavishnu Orchestra: Live At Montreux - 1974/1984 (2 DVD Set)

Formed by John McLaughlin in 1971, the Mahavishnu Orchestra pioneered the fusion of jazz elements into rock music while still undeniably retaining the power and muscle of a full on rock band. With McLaughlin as the ever-present, the line-up went through various phases and these two concerts from Montreux showcase the band at distinctively different times of their career, with the seventies show featuring later stars Jean-Luc Ponty and Michael Walden and the eighties concert featuring saxophone maestro Bill Evans. Visual footage only exists of three tracks from the 1974 show (although this is still over 73 minutes of footage) but the other tracks exist as audio masters and they have been added as bonus material.

I can only give half a review because I've only seen Disc 2 of this release. I should add, however, that I've seen the entire Disc 2 performance because the whole set in '74 was captured on video and has existed for many years as a popular Bit Torrent item before it was removed. Therefore, I feel that this official release should be penalized for claiming that only 3 pieces were ever taped for video. Apart from the factual inaccuracies and the dubious marketing, the '74 set was a great performance by the band. Everyone seems happy to be there, and technical problems were kept to a minimum. (The string section sounds overmiked at times giving some of the passages a scratchy tone, and John gets visibly annoyed with a rogue stab of feedback). As far as the '84 disc goes, I did like some of the stuff the 80's lineup put out, but I haven't seen this material yet so I can't really comment. I do hope that one day, all of the 70's Mahavishnu video stuff gets officially released (and there's plenty) so that all the band's fans have a chance to put faces to the sounds of this legendary ensemble.
