| During the 1950s, Ravi Shankar collaborated with Satyajit Ray on a trilogy about a Bengali boy's life. It broke the mold and created the first real buzz about an Indian cinematic work internationally. Coming home from the studio in April 1992, he learned of the film director's death and with Ray on his mind he completed this album named after a novella by Rabindranath Tagore. "Raga Rajya-Kalyan" is a raga of his own creation deserving of, and destined for, wider performance. "Raga Pahadi Jhinjhoti" evokes his guru, Allauddin Khan. The title track completes the album. Directly inspired by Ray's death, it quotes the Pather Panchali theme (the first in the film trilogy). One of his best studio recordings of the 1990s. This is a must have recording |
