This is Jazz...........filtered through the lenses of Funk, Latin, Rock, World beat and other adornments, neatly presented here for your amusement. The nine tunes on this disc are saturated with groove, lyricism, and tasty chops aplenty, and with enough of each to satisfy even the most cynical among us. The Jive Monkey Cartel is a difficult group to pigeonhole and that's by disposition, I know that's an overused Cliche' used to demonstrate an ensembles' versatility, but for this group it fits all too well. If I had to use just a few words to translate the overall sound of the group I would say it sounds like: constant and abstract dichotomous groove method. Having said that I would also like to point out that it does not really sound as pretentious as that just sounded. Definitely not music for the masses, but for the fan of jazz and / or fusion there is much here to enjoy and excite.
