Author: Peter Kienle John McLaughlin has been my main influence and inspiration as a composer and player since I started to play guitar. I bought all his albums and CDs until maybe a decade ago. Somehow the music didn't touch me as it used to and I lost interest in his newer music. By sheer coincidence I found out about "Now Here This" and I thought I should really see what the man is up to.
Well, I love the music on this CD! Energy, interplay, great tunes. The one thing I don't like here is the drum-heavy mix. This CD is not the only one by far which cannot be played in a car. Every tune turns into a drum solo. It seems McLaughlin always likes the drums loud and maybe he doesn't have the last word in the mix. (Don't get me wrong the drummer is stunning!)
I would have rated this 5 stars otherwise.
In comparison I put my CD copy "Extrapolation" in after I listened to "Now Here This". Musically not really the same thing but that's a fantastic mix where you can hear everything - even a bass solo while going 75mph.
