Bireli Lagrene and Sylvain Luc, live in Oslo, January 21, 2011

The duo of Bireli Lagrene and Sylvain Luc performed a very energetic and well-received set at Cosmopolite in Oslo, Norway on January 21, 2011. They started out with a most elegant version of Bobby Hebb´s “Sunny” from the era of the 1960s.

Sylvain Luc played two different Godin guitars to great effect, utilizing his phenomenal technique of emulating percussion, bass lines and overtones/harmonics.

They covered a large musical territory covering music ranging quotes from Frank Sinatra´s “Strangers in the Night”, the chord change from Richard Strauss´s “Also sprach Zarathustra” – made popular in Arthur C. Clarke/Stanley Kubrick´s ”2001 – A Space Odessey”. In the last part of the concert Stevie Wonder´s “Isn´t She Lovely” was given a very modern make up. Their rendition was even better than that from their “Duets” album.

Sylvain Luc detuned the lower strings of his Godin and played the guitar very much in the slapping bass style, like Stanley Clarke or Victor Wooten, whereas Bireli Lagrene played melody lines with harmonics only.

These two guitarists definitely have very much to offer, and a style and degree of originality most difficult to copy.´
