The Five Peace Band

The Five Peace Band – Live in Salzburg, Austria, November 9, 2008

The Five Peace Band played live at the final concert of Salzburger Jazz-Herbst in Austria Sunday November 9, 2008. The set began with John McLaughlin and Chick Corea performing a duo version of In a Silent Way. The two were then joined by Kenny Garrett on saxophone, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and Christian McBride on bass for a new rendition of The 4th Dimension’s Raju (Floating Point, Abstract Logix). After that the band featured Chick Corea´s composition The Disguise with a lengthy keyboard sequence, to be followed by John McLaughlins´ New Blues Old Bruise, from Industrial Zen, with McLaughlin and Garrett in great interplay.

The second set opened with Chick Corea´s Hymn to Andromeda, lasting almost thirty minutes, beginning with classically inspired keyboard work, later to be expanded by contributions from the other band members playing in more jazzier styles. Lasting a around twenty minutes came the bop-oriented Jackie McLean’s Mr. Jackle, originally recorded in 1966. The players had extended solos and both John McLaughlin and Kenny Garrett played their parts with great enthusiasm.

Ending set two there was John McLaughlin’s Señor CS (for Carlos Santana) – again from Industrial Zen. John McLaughlin once more played phenomenal solos incorporating both whammy bar work and tapping. Kenny Garrett on Sunday had the opportunity to deliver one long, very inspired solo – lasting around six minutes. John McLaughlin presented the band, in German, during the second set. Vinnie Colaiuta played some very impressive drum solos and Christian McBride had solos, on both electric and acoustic basses, even quoting Mozart in Mozart’s home town. This was very well received. There was one long encore, namely a quintet version of In a Silent Way which then was followed by some very funky playing on It’s About That Time. It seems like that in the around forty years gone by since In a Silent Way was first released this composition still has a timeless quality and still seems fresh. Having two different generations of Miles Davis band members, i.e. Chick Corea and John McLaughlin from the late 1960s as well as Kenny Garrett from later lineups was a most rewarding combination. The Five Peace band received a standing ovation in Salzburg. Those who are going to attend any of the remaining concerts in 2008 and 2009 are about to experience something very special indeed!
