First Hadrien Feraud, who toured North America, actually played with Dominique diPiazza in Monte Carlo in November 2006 at the charity concert given there. Dominique di Piazza performed his tour de force “Hi Jacked” at this concert and also took over as the bassist of the 4th Dimension during the European Tour – Spring and Summer of 2007. It was interesting to see this band live in Monte Carlo and later in July at Jazz-a-Vienne. This culminated in the Live DVD from Belgrade previously issued.
It is known that John McLaughlin will have Etienne Mbappe as his new bass player in April – May of 2010. Etienne Mbappe, from Cameroon, played live in Oslo, Norway on November 20, 2009. It is also a fact that Etienne Mbappe played a central role in The Zawinul Syndicate. Mbappe´s technique is tremendous. He also uses the 5 string electric bass – common to many players recently. Mr. Mbappe sings in unison with his bass- much in the same way as his fellow countryman Richard Bona does. Etienne Mbappe played with his quintet comprising Cedric Baud – guitars, Clement Janinet – violin, Cate Petit – vocals/dance as well as Nicolas Viccaro on drums. He did some vocalizing utilizing a konakol-like system from Cameroonian language Douala – in sync with the 5 string bass. This was most intricate.
The Oslo concert was very well received. This shows that the potential for John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension – in 2010 – should be huge!
