John McLaughlin and The 4th Dimension live at Jazz a Vienne July 7, 2008
John McLaughlin and The 4th Dimension are now into the second leg of their 2008 European tour. They played an extremely good concert at Jazz a Vienne, near Lyon, France on July 7, 2008. The whole band had a tightness and and interplay that was exceptional. Starting in Monte Carlo in early – May Dominique diPiazza, on very short notice, took over as bass player – performing after only a few rehearsels at their first concert at Salle Garnier in Monaco. At Jazz a Vienne both the McLaughlin/diPiazza chemistry – as well as that of Mondesir/ Husband was amazing.
The very well received set comprised Raju, Nostalgia, Hijacked, The Unknown Dissident, Five Peace Band and Mother Tongues – among others. Dominique DiPiazza’s most energetic contribution to Hijacked – from Que Alegria – was stunning.
John McLaughlin was on top of the game during the whole concert utilizing all of his facets of playing – using his trusted Godin guitar. Vibrato, tapping and classic ”Mahavishnuisms” were very much integrated throughout his performance. The classic drum duet between Mondesir and Husband, espesicially during Five Peace Band/Mother Tongues, drew a huge response.
It is interesting that Five Peace Band, which also was played by the larger version of Remember Shakti, then featuring Shankar Mahadevan on vocals – as early as in Berlin 2003 – is becoming an actual group – as mentioned at abstractlogix.com previously.
The Five Peace Band – comprising John McLaughlin, Chick Corea (keyboards), Christian McBride (bass), Kenny Garrett (saxophones) and Vinnie Colaiuta (drums) will be playing live at Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg, Austria on November 9, 2008.
Kenny Garrett and his electric quartet played a most energetic set at Ronnie Scott in London on July 1, 2008 – so The Five Peace Band is well worth waiting for.
