“It was Friday night in San Francisco at the Warfield Theatre, a night full of memories, but this night 36 years later, Jimmy Herring and I had just played with our respective bands, and now both bands were on stage to play a set exclusively of Mahavishnu music. It was the penultimate night of a Coast to Coast tour with Jimmy and his band, whose knowledge of Mahavishnu music is without equal. We played pieces from “The Inner Mounting Flame”, “Birds of Fire”, “Between Nothingness and Eternity” and “Visions of The Emerald Beyond”.
The musicians in both bands: Etienne, Gary and Ranjit, and in Jimmy’s band: Jason, Jeff, Matt and Kevin played the music like they had written it, and the way they brought the music back to life was an unforgettable experience for me personally. This recording of the 3rd set at the Warfield Theatre brings to full circle the amazing advent of The Mahavishnu Orchestra In 1971, and its renaissance this night in San Francisco.” John McLaughlin.
